"At the Salone dell'Automobile di Torino in 1992 this specific Maserate was to a surprised audience.
This is a very unique car as it has always been a prototype car but used twice in a different shape.
Both times the car was seen at the Turin Motor show.

During its first presentation the Spider was fitted with the tail light cluster from the AUDI 80. Two years later, when the OPAC Spider was introduced at the 1994 Turin show, it was fitted with tail lights from a Ferrari.
Despite being well received by the press and public alike, it was never placed into mass production."
This is a one-off prototype first shown at the Turin Motor Show in 1992 by Maserati, and again in 1994 by OPAC.
OPAC is a company specialized in the creation of prototypes and limited series productions. Situated in Rivalta di Torino, about 10 kilometers from the centre of Turin, it is Italy’s leading firm in top production for two-seaters and cabriolets.
The company collaborates with most of the important constructors and bodywork manufacturers. Between the vehicles which were made as prototype, OPAC produced the Maserati Quattroporte, Spyder and Karif, the Aston Martin Vantage and Volante, the Mercedes Benz 300 CE-24 for the German specialist builder Boschert, the Alfa Romeo Proteo.
This specific and very special prototype car is totally hand-built, and based on the structural and mechanical base of the Maserati Spyder, but using the very powerful 3.2-litre V8 engine of the Maserati Shamal.
In 2003 the car has been registered in the Netherland, owned by Mr. Jan Piet van der Weele, owner of several Maseratis. He heard from Franco Pastorelli, a Maserati specialist near Rotterdam, about a Maserati Shamal for sale in Italy. He searched on Internet and found the car for sale at Auto Speak in Modena. It was the Opac Maserati Convertible prototype, a one-off designed by Paul Breuer for Maserati for the 1993 Turin International Motorshow.
A red pre-prototype which was built in 1992 with Shamal technics (suspension and running gear) and the wheelbase of the Ghibli II. It had a Black Interior.
This first version was showed at the Turin Motor Show in 1993.
The prototype was changed in the front (other grille/bumper) and at the back (four round Ferrari-style lights) before the car was showed at the Turin International Motorshow in 1994.
Because of the 1994 motorshow the car was changed also color wise into a metallic red with a beige/black interior.

The car has been built with sheet metal made out of steel. The hood and trunk are aluminium.

The car is in a very nice condition. One can see that this is a prototype car which is not as beautiful finished as a mass production/machine built car but this is also the uniqueness of this car.
Overall the paint on the car is very nice and shiny. The rubbers are all very nice. The wheels are slightly damaged because of touching a curb. Something we can easily repair.
CONDITION INTERIOR
The interior of the Maserati is very nice. Beautiful and high quality leather has been used in the car. Here and there one can see some patina on the leather. A solution would be to respray the seats but actually the leather is too nice in our opinion for taking action.

The wood on the dashboard is extremely nice and all the meters are perfectly functioning.
DRIVING EXPERIENCE
The Maserati Opac distinguishes itself from the rest with its lines, which are very elegant and more modern than the spyder being offered by Maserati.

A soft-top version is also available, taking minutes fold back and requiring no equipment or special technique. The easily removable single piece back seat is replaced with a bench-like structure, its back piece forms the division between the seats and top housing. This is preassembled on a solid cross-bar anchor permitting a rapid and easy assembly. Once done, all that remains is to put the ‘tonneau cover’ in place, and voila’ the car is transformed into a fascinating two-seater sport car.
Whatever the version, this gutsy Convertible is both aesthetically appealing and elegant. It has a lot of personality from all points of view.
A perfect driving car with exceptional "fun factor", the combination of its powerful engine and beautiful original lines.
