1977 Ducati 900 SS

Seller's description

The Ducati 900SS is known the world over as the ultimate factory built café racer and with direct links to a world class racing program is was never going to disappoint. Following on from the legendary 750SS the model had the best possible start and these fabulous machines are now coveted by serious collectors as the pin up Ducati of its day.
This 1977 example is finished in the classic blue and silver colour scheme and having had a full restoration, is now in like new condition. It raced in some minor club races in the 1980s when new rearsets were braised on in a higher location to allow a greater lean angle but the original bolt on foot rests are with the bike. During this time the original crank-cases were also damaged and replaced – the then owner did keep them to go with the bike but his garage in Headington was broken into and they were stolen along with a lot of other alloy bike parts. A set of correct period cases were obtained during its recent rebuild (by purchasing a complete bike!) so the gear and brake levers are on the correct side for the bike and the cases have also been adapted to allow better oil distribution. The sump has been fitted with a new Alpha big end bearing to improved cage strength and the later connecting rods with revised small end bearings. The cylinder heads have been extensively worked and gas flowed and are fitted with Imola race cam shafts for extra performance at the top end. The engine is complete rebuilt so to aid the running in process the existing pistons have been fitted for the meantime as these have already given been run in these cylinders. The bike has not been started yet so it's dry and should go back to Nick Prowse of Witney who rebuilt the engine to have relevant oils and final fettling before use. After the running in period some high compression pistons can be fitted to improve performance even further.
A Rita ignition has been fitted to the bike but the original ignition system is with the large number of spares that come with the bike.
The bike is UK registered and comes with a good history file, workshop manual and a spares catalogue.
