Bombshell Betty

A six-time, land speed world record holder, Bombshell Betty was designed by engineering genius Jeff Brock and began winning competitions in 2009 – when it crushed Bonneville’s Nationals Speed Week by hitting an incredible 130.838 mph. After the last Bonneville win in 2013 – when Betty topped out at 165.735 mph – Brock was ready to move on. In 2014, he turned over Betty’s keys to world-renowned landscape photographer and car enthusiast, Peter Lik.

Betty is mainly comprised of a 1952 Buick Super Riviera – totally “Frankensteined” to resemble something out of a Mad Max film. With a raw, steel exterior and single racing seat interior, Betty’s futuristic aesthetics hint at its sophisticated inner-workings – painstakingly designed by Brock, himself. The engine is a modified 1950 Buick Roadmaster 320 cubic inch, eight-cylinder beast, bored out to fit Brock’s specifications. Arias 11:1 pistons have been installed for low compression and medium grind, while a mild-running, solid lifter cam offers a callback to stock cars of the 50’s and 60’s.

An Oldsmobile race harmonic balancer has been installed to cut down on engine vibration and parasitic power loss. Betty’s intake is compliments of Hart’s Collision Racing Shop – complete with a Jegs Quick-Fuel 750 cm racing carburetor. Betty also features an early 60’s Borg Warner T-10, manual four-speed transmission. The clutch and brake hydraulics have been acquired from Wilwood, while the Competition/Plus gear shifter comes from Hurst.

Betty’s dynamic front end has been taken from a 1968 Chevy Van with a dropped axle, narrowed to 11” and solid mounted. The rear is from a 1973 Ford Thunderbird, with a 9” differential and a 2.73 positraction configuration. The Mooneye rims are custom made by Rally America of California with 23 x 15 tires up front and Dunlop LSR 32 x 118 tires in the rear. The 8” chopped top has decked door tops and a rear section. Finally, the mid 30’s Chevy headlight buckets provide a bullet appearance to the narrowed, 6” front end.
