1965 Ford GT40 Replica
Exotic cars have always enjoyed leading roles in the “Fast & Furious” movie franchise, and the hit 2011 edition, “Fast Five,” was no exception. At the center of the story was this faithful replica of the legendary Ford GT40, which in the movie hid the key to a vast fortune until discovered by the leading character. The plot served as a fitting metaphor for the GT40 itself. In the mid-‘60s it was tasked as Ford’s leading weapon in the quest for world supremacy in motorsports, but its true potential remained out of reach until Ford put Carroll Shelby in charge of the GT40 armada after the 1964 Le Mans fiasco. Private testing ensued at Riverside, Daytona and Sebring, wind tunnel work improved the car’s aerodynamics, and relentless dynamometer testing produced engines capable of lasting not 24 but 48 hours. Just as he had done with the fiery Cobras, Shelby whipped the GT40 program into an unstoppable juggernaut that won four Le Mans 24 Hours in a row and the World Manufacturer’s Championship. Built for “Fast Five” by Race Car Replicas in Fraser, Michigan, this GT40 replica from the Joe McMurrey Collection departs from the typical movie-car formula that combines a passable cosmetic shell with rough-hewn underpinnings. It is instead a finely crafted and exceptionally faithful recreation of a specific car, P1005, one of the first GT40s prepared by Shelby American in 1965 and first campaigned by France’s Scuderia Filipinetti. Based on a hand-welded aluminum tub with fiberglass body panels, it incorporates a potent 347/540 HP small-block Ford V-8 and 5-speed manual gearbox, race-tuned suspension and a hand-stitched black leather interior with right-hand drive. A nut-and-bolt restoration was completed on the car in 2014 that included refinishing it in Shelby's traditional Guardsman Blue with Wimbledon White stripes and adding air conditioning and heating systems. After serving as one of the stars of “Fast Five” the car was displayed at Universal Studios. Universal contributed authentication papers and on-set photographs to the car’s documentation, which also includes the Race Car Replicas build sheet and registration. More than a movie car, this is an expertly rendered GT40 replica of impeccable quality.
