2011 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG
Seller's description
MODEL HISTORY
The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG is a front-engine, 2-seater luxury, limited production supercar developed by Mercedes-AMG and was the first Mercedes-Benz automobile designed totally in-house by AMG. The car, which has gull-wing doors, was the successor to the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren and was described by Mercedes-Benz as a spiritual successor to the Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing. SLS stands for “Sport Leicht Super” (Sport Light Super). The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG was assembled largely by hand, with its chassis and aluminum body shell produced by Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria and then transferred to Sindelfingen, Germany for assembly, with its engine being hand built by AMG in Affalterbach, Germany.
The SLS AMG was the first Mercedes-Benz designed and built from scratch entirely by AMG, which was given a clean sheet to execute and build its own car design from the ground up. Upon its introduction the SLS AMG’s 563 hp M159 engine was according to AMG “the world’s most powerful naturally aspirated production series engine” ever produced. The SLS AMG was also Mercedes-Benz’s last naturally aspirated engine. With the passing of the SLS AMG’s M159 monster engine, and the less potent version used in the C63 AMG, the lower output M156 version, the M152 engine used in the SLK55 AMG, is the only remaining naturally aspirated engine in the Mercedes-Benz production lineup. To quote one publication, “The years of the naturally aspirated V8 brutes are over, with Mercedes AMG adopting the downsizing trend.” However, Mercedes could not part with this remarkable engine entirely, so when it came to its GT3 race car, it elected to stick with its top of the line, naturally aspirated 6.3 litre engine.
The Gullwing version of the SLS AMG has won a number of design awards, including the 2010 red dot “best of the best” award, the iF product design award 2010 for the “Transportation Design” category, and the AUTO BILD Design Award 2010 as “Europe’s most attractive car.” It is also the only automobile to have won the gold Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany.

EXTERIOR
This striking Gullwing is draped in a gorgeous Individual AMG colour – the liquescent Alubeam silver. The lustre and finish of the paintwork is second-to-none, encasing the car in a warm glow that is radically offset by sharp bonnet louvres and straked quarter vent gills. The doors themselves are a a triumph of engineering and style, with door handles popping out when unlocked or recessed when locked or on the move.
The chrome double exit exhaust, adjustable rear wing and bold 6.3 designation offer some visual stimuli beyond the elegant lines of AMG’s first in house design whilst carbon mirrors complete a stunning specification.
INTERIOR
Boarding of the SLS is a truly first class affair, with the gullwing doors opening gracefully to reveal a unique view of a cabin adorned in leather and aluminium. Both the single and double stitching leads an elegant map line around the dash and door cards; perfectly presented with no fraying or distortion.
The seats maintain excellent original integrity whilst the colour matched entry sills and padding are remarkably clean and free of marks or grazing.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
In its ultimate specification, the M156 engine is at its most brash and its most potent in the SLS. With a number of driving modes at your disposal the character always remains – one of depth and intent with ferocious noise upon load that concludes with pops and bangs on the overrun. Sports plus or Manual override modes are the SLS sweet spot, at its visceral best, although equally the comfort setting boasts excellent damping and refinement.
The mantra of one man, one engine is of particular note here with the engineers signature sitting proudly atop the rocker cover. This particular 6.2 has been subject to a full health check and fluid service and sits in perfect mechanical order.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The optional diamond cut 5 spoke design wheels offset the individual Alubeam silver with distinction; sharp and bright against the fluid paintwork. Wrapped in MO designation Dunlop Sport Maxx GT rubber the car is best placed to make the most of both wet and dry conditions, each tyre displaying excellent tread depth.
The AMG branded calipers show bright and clean with the steel brakes performing admirably on test with excellent pedal feel and modulation.
