Seller's description

Gemballa is a tuning company based in Leonberg near Stuttgart, Germany which was founded by, and named after, Uwe Gemballa in 1981.
The name Gemballa has been synonymous with bespoke tuned cars based on Porsche vehicles. Prior to that, the firm worked on a small handful of other premium brands by special request. In the ensuing years, innovative milestones were laid down by Gemballa, whose visionary ideas set the tone for the burgeoning luxury car personalisation industry.
No other name is so strongly linked to the early days of aftermarket tuning, particularly working on Porsche vehicles. During the 33-year history of Gemballa, the standard for an entire industry was in many ways set by this company, particularly in the areas of design, aerodynamics and performance. Latterly, new model designations Mistrale, Tornado,Aero, and GT have joined the legendary Avalanche and Mirage, and are also instantly recognised by car enthusiasts all over the world.

In the 1980s Gemballa created the Avalanche based on the Porsche 911/930 (Turbo 911 flat nose) and the Cyrrus (convertible) as well as the Mirage that was similar to the Avalanche. The cars were unique with large wide body kits, side strakes, upgraded wheels, interiors, gauges, paint, hifi audio systems, etc. Some vehicles even used cameras instead of mirrors, technology far ahead of its time. Audio company Pioneer used Gemballa vehicles in their advertisements and brochures for several years.
A 600 hp (450 kW) Gemballa model held the lap record for road cars at the Nürburgring in the late 1990s once, and again in 2001 when Wolfgang Kaufmann lowered it to 7:32,52 min. It was since beaten by a Porsche Carrera GT, by less than a second. An interesting timeline on model history, with some fascinating pictures, can be found here;

Andreas Schwarz and investor Steffen Korbach were able to buy the brand rights and name rights from Gemballa in August 2010 under the new name GEMBALLA GmbH.

EXTERIOR

This particular 993 has been revolutionized from all wheel drive Turbo to full on GT2 EVO spec, with a myriad of bodywork revisions courtesy of marque specialist Gemballa. An almost exclusive use of carbon / kevlar honeycomb has shifted the design and weight  dramatically to produce an evolutionary masterpiece that mimics the very car you’d see on the Mulsanne straight. In a wonderful Polar Silver the car presents in fabulous order with fit and finish of the bodykit matching perfectly. The position of the lower bumper / splitter arrangement has attracted a light dusting of stone chips although paint protection film has preserved the front end of the car remarkably well.

INTERIOR

The lightweight door opens with ease to reveal stunning carbon fibre coated sidebars, your first indication that this is no normal Turbo cabin. The beautifully finished rear compartment features a half-cage and full RS modification with seats, trim and belts removed while up front a Becker Mexico, sunroof and climate control offer some cruising comforts. Furthermore a boost gauge and shift lights compliment the traditional dash arrangement.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

610bhp and 530lb/ft – It is fair to say that this GTR goes as well as it looks. Surprisingly the car is perfectly happy off boost with a tactility to both clutch and throttle that work in harmony at lower speeds; an approachability that the wings and splitters would certainly not suggest. With re-inforced cylinder heads, enlarged inlet / exhaust valves and bigger turbos the boost is quite phenomenal harnessed by the factory 4 wheel drive system. The huge Intercooler is also a sure-fire giveaway that this is still one of the most potent weapons on the road today.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

Centrelock Magnesium BBS split rims are Motorsport nirvana, with this set in immaculate order wearing nearly new Pirelli P-Zero rubber. Brakes are from Brembo and are quite literally immense in both scale and performance. Hiked directly from the Supercup variant the system and hardware has had a recent overhaul.

HISTORY FILE

Chassis 372198 started life as a standard 993 Turbo and was sent by its first owner to Gemballa Gmbh for a thorough re-work to the tune of £173k. The history file features a thorough breakdown in correspondence between the first owner and Uwe Gemballa where diagrams, parts and costs are discussed (and exchanged!) in huge detail. The car has more recently been supplied with a new clutch, tyres and a full brake overhaul with new discs, bells and pads.
