SM 1972 Citroen- Maserati (SB 8221)
This car’s first owner was Stanley Michael Baily Hailwood ( Mike the bike Hailwood) holder of many world championships on 2-wheels, and driver of over 50 Formula 1&2 Grand Prix in a two part career from the 1960’s to the 1970s.
Whether this car was presented to Mike by John Surtees in 1972 for winning the European Formula 2 at Monza for the Surtees Team , or whether Mike bought it himself, is unclear, but what is clear is that it was the one car that Mike loved and kept longer than any other. He used it extensively in Europe and raced it in practice on the Jarama circuit. There is a reference by Rod Sawyer, John Surtees business partner, that Mike drove his Citroen Maserati around Jarama in the dry as quickly as Schenken drove Formula one Surtees in the wet !
It was in Europe that the car was modified and the cams reground for improved performance.
When Mike and his family immigrated to New Zealand in late 1975, he brought the car with him and it was first registered in Auckland in February 1976.
However, 18 months in New Zealand proved too much for Mike. He was bored and in 1977 he and his family returned to the UK , leaving the SM behind in Auckland. In 1981, at the age of 40, Mike along with his daughter were killed in a tragic accident with a semi-trailer.
The SM was next bought by a Tauranga motor restorer and Citroen enthusiast. It was sold again in 1991 to a doctor and then to its current owners in 1997.
It was in 1970 at the Geneva Motor Show that Citroen , with their usual flamboyance unveiled the remarkable Citroen SM or Citroen ”Special Maserati”. Not only was the design a show stopper but the hydro-pneumatic suspension, self-centering variable power steering, front wheel drive plus inboard disc brakes etc made this car something very special to drive, not to mention the V6 all alloy quad-cam Maserati engine.
A very special car , with great history.
