Continental Cars is proud to once again present a Porsche we first advertsed for sale more than 40yrs ago. This fine example from the 911 Classic period of 1963 - 1974 was the only 911 Targa sold NZ new during 1973 and has remained in the country ever since.
The Targa body style was Porsche s response to 1960s fears that incoming safety regulations would eliminate covertible sports cars from the marketplace. Porsche made the stainless steel rollover bar a design feature and named the version Targa (Italian for shield) evoking images of the Targa Florio race that Porsche cars would later dominate.
This Porsche features a 2.4 litre flat six engine with mechanical fuel injection in mid-range 165 hp form. The E designation comes from the German for fuel injection, Ein spritzung.
Also featured is the innovative Sportomatic transmission, a forerunner to the popular Tiptronic transmission and in 1973, available to special order only. Moving the gear lever activates a switch which electrically operates the clutch, enabling smooth manual gear changes without a clutch pedal.
